History of The Taste of Suffolk

The Simons family have been involved in the food industry for three generations. They developed the Broad Oak range of products and established a very successful manufacturing base in Essex. From there they serviced a wide selection of customers from the Home Counties to the Midlands with award winning products.

On the back of that success and the introduction of Christopher Simons as Managing Director it encouraged a desire to expand. It was always important to retain local sourcing and manufacturing within East Anglia and they were the key ingredients as the family looked for acquisitions.

In 2010 an existing Suffolk based food production business was added to the family fold. It consisted of DP Meats (quality bacon and ham) and Country Cottage Cooked Meats (sausages), originally started in 1989 by the two principal owners who had many years’ experience in the industry.

The acquisition was overseen by Roger Simons who came out of retirement to manage the project leaving Chris to oversee the combined business portfolio. The purchase of the Suffolk business provided a manufacturing base in Suffolk, a team of experienced employees, some new product ranges and the opportunity to continue producing some long established quality food products. These included historic smoked meats using a natural oak smoking technique that has remained unchanged for many years.

With Roger taking the lead his inspiration was to bring all the products under the newly formed Taste of Suffolk branding. Additionally a significant investment was made to consolidate two Suffolk factories into one manufacturing unit close to the historic market town of Bury St Edmunds with all the modern production standards required.

Since 2010 the customer base has grown and new product ranges developed. The business still focuses heavily on a quality delivery service to local independent shops, schools and delicatessens. In addition it has a long established relationship with the East of England
Co-operative Society providing bespoke ranges for their retail stores including the Craske special recipe sausages and “Sourced locally” range.

Sales of locally sourced product are also made via Tesco and Asda stores.
